2022-2023 ESSER III/SIIP At-a-Glance

Rocky Run Middle School

Region 5

Dr. Amy Goodloe, Principal

Background: The Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER III) is a federal grant which requires that spending be used in specific areas.  Part of the Fairfax County Public Schools spending plan identifies funding to be used for Unfinished Learning and Student Academic and Social, Emotional, Mental Health (Wellness) Needs.  Schools have been given funding allocations to support the academic and wellness needs of students.  Schools are required to create plans in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Wellness highlighting the strategies they will use to support these areas using their ESSER III funding.  These strategies are shown below.

ESSER III English Language Arts Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in English Language Arts.

Goal:  By June 2023, all students in identified subgroups (Students with Disabilities and English Learners) will demonstrate growth in reading comprehension by meeting their individualized Lexile growth targets as measured by the Reading Inventory (RI).

Strategy 1

Teach essential standards by leveraging Tier 1 practices through scaffolding, differentiation, small group instruction, and other instructional support.

Strategy 2

Reteach Essential Standards through small group instruction during intervention or flexible instructional time.

Strategy 3

Investigate, collect, and utilize effective and high-impact strategies and resources to use for intervention after school or during the school day.

ESSER III Mathematics Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students are making sufficient progress to be on grade level in Mathematics.

Goal:  By June 2023, all students in identified subgroups (Students with Disabilities and English Learners) will demonstrate growth in mathematical achievement by meeting their individualized growth targets as measured by the Math Inventory (MI).

Strategy 1

Teach essential standards by leveraging Tier 1 practices through scaffolding, differentiation, small group instruction, and other instructional supports.

Strategy 2

Reteach Essential Standards through small group instruction during intervention or flexible instructional time.

Strategy 3

Investigate, collect, and utilize effective and high-impact strategies and resources to use for intervention after school or during the school day.

ESSER III Wellness Strategies

Outcome: Ensure students feel safe, included, and supported in the school environment.

Goals:  By the end of the 2022-2023 school year:

  1. Rocky Run staff will report increases in improvement of knowledge of SEL and capacity to engage in required practices on an internal survey.
  2. Our school will utilize RAM and CASEL strategies to teach self-management subskills.
  3. Our school will utilize RAM and CASEL strategies to build connected relationships between staff and students.

Strategy 1

Develop adults’ foundational knowledge regarding the rationale for required practices and tools to support and strengthen their implementation of Tier 1 SEL best practices.

Strategy 2

Provide targeted or intensive interventions for students to support needs at Tier 2 and 3 (small groups, mentoring, Check & Connect, etc.).

Strategy 3

Provide opportunities for family engagement around SEL practices for school and for home.

Portrait of a Graduate (POG)

Outcome: All students will complete a POG Presentation of Learning (POL) by 2025-26.

Goal:  By June 2023, 100% of students will demonstrate increased understanding of POG as reported on a student survey given through Advisory at the beginning and end of the year. 100% of staff will show growth in their understanding of POG practices as measured by the school-wide POG inventory shared at the beginning and end of the year.

Strategy 1

The school will build an understanding with students, staff, and the community about why POG attributes and skills positively impact students within and beyond school.

Strategy 2

The English 8 CT will refine their culminating project, ensuring that it is aligned with the goals of POG POL.

Strategy 3

The Leadership Council will develop a vision and a set of common instructional practices that our entire school can begin to work with around Portrait of a Graduate attributes.
