Library Frequently Asked Questions
- What do librarians do at the middle school level?
- Librarians support students and teachers in many different ways.
- We make sure students and teachers have access to both print and ebooks that meet personal interests and academic needs.
- We collaborate with teachers, providing resources and co-teaching support for classes and lessons.
- We love recommending books and providing a safe space for students to be their authentic selves.
- We support staff by facilitating professional development on teaching strategies, information literacy, and much more!
- When can students come to the library?
- Students can come to the Rocky Run Library before school, after school, and during Rock Time. Students must be mindful of their time as we do not write late passes if they stop in between classes.
- Our official hours are 7:10-2:25.
- What do students do in the library?
- Students come to the library to check out books, but they can also use our space much like a public library: to sit and get work done, to work with others on assignments and projects, and to have fun! We have some great events planned each year to get students excited about reading, learning, and thinking in the library.
- What clubs take place in the library?
- Several clubs take place in the library, including Creativity Club (makerspace), Student Library Advisory Team (SLAT), Battle of the Books, and more! Learn about these clubs and more on the after-school page.
- How many books can students check out?
- Rocky Run students can check out as many books as they can responsibly handle. We emphasize that middle school is about growing up and learning what is right for each of us. For some students, they can only handle 1 book at a time; for others, it's 4 or 5 books.
- Students can always check out, even if they have overdue books.
- MackinVIA is the platform for eBooks & eAudiobooks and Destiny Discover is the library catalog to explore the books on the shelves of our library.
- Students log into both using their fcpsschools account information and can browse, place holds, and renew items on their own.
- Students receive an email to their fcpsschools account at the end of the month that lists any books they have overdue.
- How can my child get help finding a book to read?
- Mrs. Grover is happy to suggest titles for students and loves matching students with the right books for them!
- In the library, students can explore our many monthly displays and ask for recommendations.
- Lots of Rocky Run teachers are readers! Students can ask any teacher for book recommendations, too.
- Both Destiny Discover and MackinVIA have Librarian Top Picks Collections that can assist students in finding a book they would like to read.
- How do we pay for lost or damaged books?
- If you think a book has been lost, please contact Mrs. Grover ([email protected]) to verify that it is not on a library shelf or waiting to be checked in. This is an important first step!
- If a book has been damaged and cannot be used by other students, it happens!
- You will be asked to pay the cost of replacement or purchase a new copy of the same title. Contact Mrs. Grover to start the replacement process.
What are the Inspiration Studio and Tech Den?
- These are our two makerspaces located in the library.
- Thanks to a generous grant from the Asha-Jyothi Foundation, along with many donations from our community, these two rooms are outfitted with many different supplies for students to design and create anything they can dream up!
- Students can access the Inspiration Studio and Tech Den during Rock Time, after school during Creativity Club, and with classes. Click here to learn more about the Inspiration Studio!
- Also, students can experience our Virtual Makerspace (needs an fcpsschools account) to keep making even when the spaces aren't available.
